Pin Curls and Grandma’s Head Wrap Solutions

When I was a young girl, my grandmother would sit in a rocking chair and have me sit on the floor Indian style in front of her.  Without a doubt, I knew she was going to pin curl my hair. In this scenario, I had very long thick native black hair and you can imagine how many hours that would take. Needless to say, grandma enjoyed pin curling my hair. She would sing, yodel and tell me stories of her childhood. After all the pins were in my head, she would then wrap a handkerchief or bandanna over my head to keep the pins from falling out. Even so, when I slept on the pullout couch in the living room, they did not fall out.

My sisters and cousins and I spent most of our summers and weekends at grandma’s house.  Obviously, our parents were working daily.  For this reason, it’s like we looked after grandma and she looked after us.  Little did we know that those memories would last with each one of us forever.

Trying to keep my head cool

As time went on, I stopped going to grandma’s house.  Clearly, you could say things changed in the family.  Besides, we got older and grandma got dementia. In short, no more family time and no more pin curls.  Thus, no more time with grandma. As I became a teenager, I started to play softball all year long. Additionally, this meant playing in the hot summer sun too.  In fact, I recall playing on three teams one summer and working full-time. Because of the summer heat, I started wearing bandannas to help keep my head cool. Specifically, I would dip them in water and than toss on my head.

Desert Dust Storms Cover that Mouth Up

After graduation, I headed out west to Arizona. Despite having a good home in Narragansett, RI with friends and family, I ventured out of the nest. Along with the need to try something different, I was able to spend time with my dad, step mom and my younger brother. Of course going from the ocean to the desert was not an easy adjustment.  I had much to learn about the world and my life. My dad lived in a trailer in the desert. Like for real, the desert. Every day I had to check for rattle snakes, scorpions and tarantulas. This was a place where I would need to wear something over my mouth during sand or dust storms. Yes, they did come thru where I was staying. There is no doubt that bandanna’s and head wraps started becoming apart of my outfits in the desert too.

The mom maneuver head wrap

When I became a mom, I needed to keep my hair up and out of the way of my children’s little fingers.  My most precious gems would either pull at my hoop earrings or my hair. Above all, having my hair in a head wrap made it easier for me to maneuver throughout mom hood. Obviously, cooking and cleaning in head wraps became a must. As a result, my hair was in a head wrap most of the time. I guess you could say it became a habit for me to wear them daily. If you don’t see me wearing one, you can know that I at least carry one on me at all times.

No wonder I started selling head wraps

Catching Dream with the help of a simple dream catcher

By looking at the picture above you see a dream catcher with the sun shining through it. This tells us that we have dreams that are still left for us to achieve prior to the sun setting. Legend also says that if you place the dream catcher above your head at night, the bad dreams will become entangled in the web which will be burned at suns first light. As a result of catching the bad dreams, this will allow your good dreams to pass through the web and travel down the feathers hanging from the dream catcher . Ultimately the good dreams will pass down into your mind. As a result, this process will allow you to see and follow your good dreams. Could this be where a vision comes from?

Why My Fascination with Dream Catchers

Why dream catchers
The Legend of the Dream Catcher

What is the purpose of a Dream Catcher?

Let’s start with the traditional meaning of what is a dream catcher and what does it mean to catch dreams? Specifically, the meaning of dream catchers comes from the Original Natives or in my knowledge Indigenous People of this land we call America.

In addition, each tribe or tribal nation have a different cultural meaning and they also have their own legend of the dream catcher’s purpose. Above all, it is believed that when you hang a dream catcher over your bed it will catch the bad dreams and let the good dreams pass thru.

Obviously for this purpose, bad dreams not knowing their way, are caught in the web and melt away in the first light of morning. In this case, the first light of morning represents the sun’s light.

Specifically, the sun’s light will burn away the bad dreams that are caught in the web. As a result of getting caught in the web, the bad dreams will be no more. Where as, the good dreams will slip thru the web and slide down the feathers. Finally, flowing down into the dreamer.

I’m a firm believer in following your dreams so let’s make sure they are good dreams

Why Dream Catchers
My very first dream catcher made of twigs

My fascination with dream catchers began at a young age. Specifically, I would and still do collect them from different places. Firstly, they came from Native American Indian Pow Wows. As well as, visits to Indian Reservations from Rhode Island, Connecticut, Arizona, Massachusetts, New York, Florida and Hawaii. Such as, the one in the picture above is made out of sticks and twigs. It was the first dream catcher I ever bought myself.

Needless to say, I was working with family tribal members of the Narragansett Indian Tribe at the International Indian Pow Wow in Connecticut on the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation. Ultimately, this dream catcher caught my eye because it was different and it was made from nature. Additionally, over the years friends and family members would give them to me as gifts.

Catching Dreams is part of my fascination with dream catchers

I remember one day, I walked into the house and saw an orchid plant on the kitchen table along with a card nestled up against the pot. Clearly, I opened the card and started to read. At that specific moment my eyes began to fill up with water. At this point, I could feel the tears start to fall down my face. As I read, the words “my dream catcher, always catching dreams and making mine and everyone else’s dreams come true”, it took me a minute to take it all in. At an instant 40 years of my life flashed back and forth before my very soul.

Clearly, I love to help people catch their dreams and make them come true. Of course, their is no guarantee, but when someone let’s me help them, it is possible to make those dreams a reality. It should be noted that the big catcher is, you just don’t know when.

What does dream catching mean to me?

why dream catchers
The Girl Behind catching her dreams

I have always believed in the legend of the dream catcher. Every dream I have ever wished has come true. Don’t get me wrong, I have put in a lot of sweat and tears to get to where I am today. It all started with a dream and a girl behind the dream.

Could you believe in the legend of the dream catcher? Would you believe in your dreams? Do you believe in yourself?
