Day Tripping to Block Island

How Did I travel to Block Island?

Our day tripping adventure to Block Island all started when we decided to take the Block Island Ferry regular trip which was only like $23 round trip. Not bad of a price since its like $11.50 each way or estimated @$10 each way (I prefer to think I spent less on the trip, lol. Of course you can take the fast ferry which gets you there in only a 1/2 hour but the prices were double and I prefer to use my money wisely and enjoy the ride. Of course we have options to take private boats but sometimes it’s fun to be a tourist in your own hometown. It was a gorgeous day for day tripping.

Where Is Block Island?

Block Island is an island off the coast of Rhode Island and it takes just about an hour by boat to get there from Pt. Judith, RI. It is also east of Montauk Point, Long Island. You can take a boat from New London, CT, Pt. Judith, RI and Newport, RI if you wish. As an alternative option, I believe they also have a small airport for those who would like to fly into the island. I actually thought about sky-diving onto the Island. Just kidding, but hey it could be an option, you never know.

How was Block Island Named?

In history they tell us that the The Island was named after Dutch explorer Adriaen Block who named it after himself when he sailed to the island in 1614. Hence the name Block Island. However, the first inhabitants of Block Island were the Native American Indians. Specifically, The Niantics who eventually merged with The Narragansett Indian Tribe. Their is evidence that dates back over thousands of years which can be learned on the Block Island Historical website (https://blockislandhistorical.org). The Natives called the Island “Manisses” which means “Island of the Little God”.

Why Did I take a Day Trip to Block Island?

Day tripping to Block Island was a way for me and my sister and girl friends to take an excursion in just one day. Our agenda included:

  • Time spent with loved ones-Priceless
  • Two Boat Rides on the Atlantic Ocean
  • Swimming in the Ocean which I must add was just the right medicine for me.
  • Riding bikes around the island (Great Scenery and Exercise)
  • Eating at Poor Man’s Pub for lunch
  • Drinking a cocktail or two at The Yellow Kitten and Ballard’s
  • Dancing and Swimming at Ballard’s Beach
  • Shopping
  • Watching an Amazing Sunset over the ocean
  • Meeting new people from different places
  • Singing “Hey Jude” by The Beatles as we entered Block Island Sound
  • Stress Free Rejuvenation Day
  • Memories Made to Last a Life Time

Don’t forget your Camera!!

I’m not going to lie, this action mount head mount for my cell phone is on my wish list. I did use my smart phone camera which is fine, but it would have been nice if I was hands free and recording while I was biking the island.

We were lucky to watch the sun setting in the distance. Pictures do not do it justice and it literally took our breaths away even for that moment in time.

The House Smells Like Lobster 🦞

The Aroma of Memory Lane

LOBSTER NATION

As I opened the door to step inside my house after a long day at the office, I got a big whif of an old memory. “I Know that smell and I know it very well”. My eyes went straight to the pot on the stove. “oh yes, we must be having lobster tonight!” I can catch a lobster, I can cook a lobster and I can eat a lobster. I must have been amuned to this smell working in a seafood restaurant, cooking about 500 lobsters a day. Why is it, the smell seems different when you cook it in the house? “It must be that old bay seasoning”. My only thought was I hope we have bleach so we can clean the pans right away. I really don’t want seagulls flying around the house.

Raised by the Boats

Kicking back on the Lobster Boat

If you ask me where I grew up, I usually respond right on the water. My family are all lobstermen and fishermen. It’s in our blood. Yes, we caught our own meals. We could sell what we caught too. Life on the boats as a kid was fun. We had cookouts on the boats, we could jump off the boats to swim. We even would latch boats next to each other and hop from boat to boat out in the middle of the ocean. The Blessing of the Fleet was always a blast too. A lot of our family memories were made on the boats. I say boats, because their was more than one boat in the family.

Where it all came from

The Original Silver Fox

Gramps moved down from the city to start his own off shore lobstering business. Infact, the yard was larger than the actual house they slept in. Needed a spot to build and keep your own lobster pots. He fed all of his children and grandchildren this way. He also passed down his legacy to his two sons who are also successful lobstermen, running their own boats and businesses just like he did. So, when I say I know the lobster smell all to well, believe me. Picture a little girl hugging her grandfather after his long day out at sea and when she curled into his body, the smell from his sweatshirt was that of a LOBSTERMAN 🦞.

Here’s to summertime seafood cooking

Do you enjoy lobsters? Do you like going out on boats? Summer months are shorter and shorter these days. Enjoy the seabreeze as much as you can.

Sitting by the dock of the bay

I believe my destination and my journey are different from the person who is sitting right next me. I also believe that no two journeys or paths are the same. We are all unique and special in our own way. Our uniqueness is what makes us beautiful. I would be bored if everyone was exactly like me. I like to be challenged every now and then. Yes, I can get frustrated with things and people but I really don’t mind it. I say the more triggers you make the better I get. LOL! Have you taken the time to reflect recently? When was the last time you were sitting by the dock of the bay?

Soaking up the sun 🌞

Today I’m listening to the waves crash on the ocean floor. I decided to take a drive down to the Ocean Mist Beach Bar in South Kingstown, RI to meet up with my girlfriend. I needed to feel the sun’s rays beat against my flesh. The sun was hitting me in the right spot. Shining onto my face and body and allowing me to take in the natural vitamin D. As a result, my body felt so good to put my feet into the warm sand and lie down. I thought to myself, what is better than this? Seriously, what is better than feeling stress free and happy? I’m relaxing by this enormous beauty formed from mother nature. Content I am. Happy I am. One I am.

Thru the window box

What do you see in the picture below? Well, I see that the ocean view is obscured by a frame of wood. In order for me to get a better view, I must take a step forward in order to capture the whole scene. To me, moving forward meant moving past the blockages of bar stools and people in my way or in other words life. Yes, of course I could have taken a step back and lost site of the entire seascape altogether.

Small Adjustments Can Make A Difference

On the other hand, I could have stayed right where I was and not making a move at all. That would mean I would have to continue to glance at the ocean from a picture box. Of course I wanted a better picture so graciously I made my way to the opening. My Picture is a gorgeous view and breathtaking it was. At that moment in time I got a glimpse of my past, present and future all at that one moment of an ocean view.

As one day ends another begins

We always hear the term “when one door closes another opens“, the same is true when we say as one day ends another begins. The sun sets and then rises again. In Sheri terms the wave in motion is filled with emotions. Turning our days into nights and our nights into days. I was always taught that the moon controls the tides (high and low) and that the moon also controls or has an effect on our emotions. I guess that is why they say “my emotions are like the waves in the ocean“.

The Future Has Not Happened Yet

The world is turning continuously. Our minds and emotions are always moving at top speed just like a roller coaster. Here’s a good one for ya, the ocean was here before the roller coaster came into existence. Did that make you think for minute? Some days we are left wondering if this peacefulness will stay or go. If pictures can say a thousand words than I see the future further out in the distance. It’s possible to get to my future, but why do I need to speed thru my present to get there? I need to embrace my present because before we know it we will be missing the past.

Are you feeling trapped by our own existence? Do you embrace the struggles of today? Do you ever feel better when you are soaking up in the sun?
