How Acorns Helped Me Grow My Savings Without Even Trying 🌱💰

Let’s face it — saving money isn’t always easy. Between bills, unexpected expenses, and everyday life, it can feel impossible to consistently put money aside. That’s where Acorns comes in — a simple, automated investing app that takes the guesswork (and discipline) out of saving and investing.

I started using Acorns because I wanted a low-effort way to start growing my money. Spoiler: It worked. And now I want to share why I think it’s one of the easiest tools to help you learn and begin to build a financial foundation — especially if you’re just getting started.

🌟 What Is Acorns?

Acorns is a micro-investing platform that helps you invest your spare change automatically. It links to your debit or credit card, rounds up your purchases to the nearest dollar, and invests that change into diversified portfolios designed by experts.

Example:
Spend $3.60 on coffee → Acorns rounds it to $4.00 → Invests the $0.40 for you.

You can also schedule recurring contributions and earn rewards from partnered brands when you shop through the app — all while your money grows in the background.

💡 Top Benefits of Using Acorns

1. Automated Saving & Investing

Set it and forget it. Your spare change gets invested automatically, and over time, that adds up. It’s perfect for people who struggle with saving consistently.

2. Fractional Shares & Diversification

You don’t need thousands to invest. Acorns allows you to invest small amounts across a diversified portfolio of ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds), meaning your risk is spread out.

3. Earn While You Spend

Acorns partners with 350+ brands like Nike, Walmart, and Airbnb. When you shop with them through Acorns, they invest a percentage back into your account. Free money? Yes, please.

4. Educational Tools Built-In

New to investing? No problem. Acorns offers helpful articles, tools, and tips to boost your financial knowledge and confidence.

5. All-In-One Financial Tool

From investing and retirement to banking and budgeting, Acorns is more than just a savings app. It’s an ecosystem designed to support your long-term financial wellness.

New Tech for My 2007 Toyota Avalon: A Navigation System Upgrade That Actually Made Me Laugh

New Tech for My 2007 Toyota Avalon: A Navigation System Upgrade That Actually Made Me Laugh

Let me start by saying: I genuinely appreciate my 2007 Toyota Avalon. It may be pushing 20 years old, but it’s reliable, fully paid off, and still runs like a dream. But when I first climbed in and noticed something that stopped me in my tracks—and made me laugh—it was the cassette tape player. Yes, in 2025, my car still had a tape deck!

Since I travel quite a bit, I figured it was time to give my Avalon a little modern tech boost. At the top of my list? A solid GPS navigation system. After some digging (and chuckling at the outdated options), I found one that was actually recommended for Avalons from this era.

Let me start by saying: I appreciate my 2007 Toyota Avalon. Sure, it’s nearly two decades old, but I own it outright, and it still runs like a dream. That said, it was definitely showing its age when I first climbed in and noticed something that made me giggle—a tape player. Yes, a cassette tape player in 2025!

Since I travel quite a bit, I figured it was time to give my new trusty Avalon a little tech upgrade. A GPS navigation system was at the top of my list, and after doing some research (and laughing at some of the options), I found one that was actually recommended for my car’s year and model.

The System I Chose

I ended up going with a head unit found on Amazon:
👉 Car Radio Stereo for Toyota Avalon 2006–2010
It’s a 9-inch 1280×800 touch screen unit with built-in CarPlay and Android Auto, 4GB RAM / 64GB ROM, DSP audio, Bluetooth, GPS, WiFi, and yes—a backup camera!

The Installation & First Impressions

I had it installed recently, and let me tell you, seeing a backup camera pop up when I shifted into reverse made me giggle. I mean, backup cameras weren’t even common back when this car was made!

The unit booted up quickly, and I was pleasantly surprised by the clean interface. It connects easily to my phone, and I’ve already tested out a few features. Pandora streams without a hitch, and I was able to make a hands-free phone call using the voice assistant. That alone makes highway travel so much easier and safer.

Android Car Media Player HC8163

What’s Next?

There are still a few features I need to test—like GPS navigation on a long road trip—but so far, I’m really impressed. It feels like I’ve given my Avalon a new lease on life, without having to buy a whole new car.

If you’re holding on to an older Toyota Avalon (or any older car, really) and thinking about upgrading your stereo/navigation system, I highly recommend this unit. It’s affordable, functional, and makes a world of difference for daily driving and travel.

Product Recap:

Long story short: if you’re driving an older Avalon (or really any older car) and want modern features without buying a whole new vehicle, this upgrade is 100% worth it. Bonus? The tape player is still there—for the vintage vibes, of course. 😂

Why Are Ants Invading Your House in the Fall? (And How to Stop Them)

Why Are Ants Invading Your House in the Fall? (And How to Stop Them)
As autumn settles in and temperatures drop, you’re not the only one seeking warmth—ants are too. While most people associate ant invasions with the heat of summer, fall is actually a prime time for these tiny pests to sneak indoors. Cooler weather means dwindling food sources outside, and your cozy, crumb-filled kitchen starts to look pretty inviting.

So why are ants suddenly showing up in your bathroom, kitchen, or even your walls—and what can you do to send them packing?

Let’s break down the reasons behind fall ant invasions, how to spot the signs early, and most importantly, how to eliminate and prevent them using natural remedies, store-bought solutions, and a few simple home maintenance tricks.

As the leaves start to change and temperatures begin to drop, you might notice some unexpected guests in your home—ants. While these tiny intruders are often associated with summer picnics, many homeowners find themselves battling ant invasions in the fall. But why is this happening, and more importantly, how can you stop it?

Let’s break it down.

🐜 Why Ants Come Indoors in the Fall

As the weather cools, ants start preparing for winter. They’re driven by a few key survival instincts:

  • Searching for warmth: Your cozy home offers a perfect refuge from the cold.
  • Food scarcity outdoors: With fewer food sources available outside, ants venture inside looking for crumbs, sweets, and other edibles.
  • Nesting opportunities: Ants may set up nests inside your walls, floors, or insulation if they find it hospitable.

In short: your home becomes an attractive option for survival.

🔍 Signs You Have an Ant Problem

Not sure if it’s a one-time visitor or the beginning of an invasion? Look out for:

  • Visible trails of ants
  • Piles of sawdust-like material (sign of carpenter ants)
  • Rustling sounds inside walls
  • Ants gathering around water sources like sinks or bathtubs

🛠️ How to Get Rid of Ants in the Fall

Here’s your action plan for kicking ants out—and keeping them out.

1. Seal Entry Points

Ants can get in through the tiniest cracks. Seal windows, door frames, and foundation gaps with a quality caulk like:

👉 GE Advanced Silicone Sealant – Waterproof & Weatherproof

2. Keep Your Home Clean

Crumbs, spills, and pet food attract ants quickly. Vacuum regularly and wipe down kitchen counters with vinegar or citrus-based cleaners.

👉 Aunt Fannie’s Vinegar Wash Floor Cleaner – Great natural option!

3. Use Ant Baits

Ant baits work by attracting ants, who then carry poison back to the colony. This eliminates the entire nest over time.

👉 TERRO Liquid Ant Baits – Highly rated and easy to use.

4. Try Natural Repellents

If you prefer non-toxic options, try these:

5. Call a Professional (If Necessary)

If you see large numbers of ants or carpenter ants (which can damage wood), a professional pest control company may be your best bet.

🧠 Pro Tip: Prevention is Key

The best way to deal with ants is to keep them from coming inside in the first place.

✅ Store food in sealed containers
✅ Take out trash regularly
✅ Keep pet food in airtight bins
✅ Trim tree branches and shrubs away from the house

Final Thoughts

Ants coming into your house in the fall isn’t unusual—but it is manageable. By sealing up entry points, using the right products, and staying vigilant, you can keep your home ant-free all season long.

Rain-X Really Works — Here’s Why I Never Drive Without It

I used to think Rain-X was just another overhyped car product — the kind of thing that looks cool in commercials but doesn’t actually help much. That changed the day my husband applied it to my windshield before a rainy drive. I was shocked by how the rain just beaded up and flew off the glass, even before I turned on the wipers. Now, I use Rain-X regularly, and I won’t drive in the rain without it.

If you’ve ever wondered whether Rain-X is worth the few extra bucks or minutes of effort, here’s my take — along with some tips, pros and cons I’ve learned along the way.

🛠️ How I Use Rain-X (and How You Can Too)

Applying Rain-X is super easy, but there’s a right way to do it if you want the best results. Here’s what I do:

  1. Clean your windshield thoroughly – dirt and residue will interfere with the coating.
  2. Dry the glass completely – moisture prevents Rain-X from bonding properly.
  3. Apply in a shaded area – direct sunlight can cause streaking or evaporation.
  4. Use a microfiber cloth or paper towel to apply Rain-X in circular motions.
  5. Let it haze, then buff it off with a dry cloth.

🌀 Pro tip: Reapply every 2–4 weeks (or after a few car washes) to keep the effect strong.

✅ Pros of Using Rain-X

  • Improved visibility: At highway speeds, I often don’t even need to use my wipers — water just rolls off.
  • Easier cleaning: Bugs, dirt, and even frost are easier to remove from treated glass.
  • Increased safety: Better visibility in heavy rain = more reaction time and less stress.
  • Affordable & fast: A single bottle lasts a long time, and it takes just minutes to apply.

Prepping for the downpour with Rain-X wipers—clear vision ahead!

⚠️ Cons (and How to Deal with Them)

  • Wiper chatter: Sometimes your wipers might skip or squeak after application. A quick fix is cleaning the wiper blades or using Rain-X wiper fluid to reduce friction.
  • Streaking if applied incorrectly: Applying too much or in direct sunlight can leave hazy streaks. Stick to shaded areas and follow the instructions carefully.
  • Needs regular reapplication: The coating doesn’t last forever, especially with frequent washing or heavy use.

💡 Extra Tips & Uses

  • Don’t forget the side windows and mirrors — the water-repellent effect helps there too.
  • Try Rain-X Anti-Fog for interior glass in colder months.
  • Motorcycle visors, helmet shields, and even shower doors can benefit from the same treatment.

💬 Final Thoughts

Rain-X isn’t a gimmick — it’s a cheap, easy upgrade that genuinely improves safety and visibility during bad weather. If you drive in the rain often (or just hate how much your wipers struggle), I highly recommend giving it a try.

It made a noticeable difference for me and my husband — and once you try it, I think you’ll be just as surprised as I was.

Blood, Sweat, and Holidays: What Labor Day Really Means

Labor Day isn’t just a day off—it’s a tribute to the workers who built this country. From factories to fields, offices to job sites, we honor the hands that keep America moving. 💪🇺🇸 #LaborDay #MadeInUSA #HardWorkMatters

🛠️ What Is Labor Day and Why Does It Matter?

As summer winds down, the first Monday in September marks more than just a long weekend—it’s Labor Day, a national holiday in the United States dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.

But why do we celebrate Labor Day, and what does it actually mean?

The reward isn’t in the look—it’s in the labor
Yard work might not be glamorous, but it sure is honest

📜 A Brief History of Labor Day

Labor Day began in the late 19th century during a time when the average American worker toiled 12-hour days, seven days a week, just to make a basic living. Children as young as 10 worked in factories. Safety conditions were often poor, and wages were low.

The labor movement rose in response—demanding better pay, safer workplaces, and more reasonable hours. Strikes and protests became common, with workers banding together to demand change.

The first official Labor Day celebration took place in New York City in 1882, organized by labor unions. It wasn’t until 1894, after the nationwide Pullman Strike, that Labor Day became a federal holiday, signed into law by President Grover Cleveland.

🧑‍🏭 What Labor Day Means Today

For many, Labor Day signals the unofficial end of summer—think barbecues, sales, and back-to-school shopping. But it’s also an opportunity to reflect on the value of work, the importance of fair labor practices, and how far we’ve come thanks to the efforts of workers and unions.

Today’s workforce is more diverse than ever, and while many enjoy rights that workers in the 1800s could only dream of, there are still ongoing conversations about:

  • Work-life balance
  • Living wages
  • Worker protections in the gig economy
  • Remote work and its future
  • Labor rights in a globalized world

🧠 A Moment to Reflect

Labor Day isn’t just about taking a break—it’s about appreciating the people who make everything run: from nurses and factory workers to teachers, delivery drivers, software developers, and more.

So whether you’re enjoying a day off, working through the holiday, or somewhere in between—take a moment to appreciate the labor behind the scenes.

From Junk to Flame: Scrappy Candle-Making Experiments

Turn your household scraps into something magical. This DIY guide walks you through creative candle-making using leftover wax, jars, crayons, and more. Sustainable, experimental, and fun!

🔥 From Junk to Flame: Scrappy Candle-Making Experiments

Let’s face it — we all have a drawer, a cupboard, or a random box filled with stuff: half-used candles, chipped mugs, empty jars, crayon stubs, and other forgotten bits and bobs. What if I told you these scraps are the perfect ingredients for your next cozy creation?

Welcome to From Junk to Flame, where we turn overlooked household leftovers into beautiful, functional DIY candles. No fancy equipment, no waste — just curiosity, a little fire, and some creative combustion.

🧪 The Experiment Begins

The fun part of scrappy candle-making is treating it like a low-stakes science experiment. You don’t need a blueprint — just a curious mind and some fire safety common sense. Here’s what I started with:

  • 🕯️ Old candle stubs and wax remnants
  • 🖍️ Broken crayons (great for color!)
  • ☕ Mismatched teacups and chipped mugs
  • 🧵 Cotton string (as emergency wicks)
  • 🥄 A double boiler (or a makeshift one using a pot + bowl)

Goal: Make something that burns and looks cool doing it.

🔧 Tools & Setup (a.k.a. Your DIY Candle Lab)

Before you begin, assemble your “lab”:

  • A heat-safe pouring container
  • A stir stick (chopsticks work great)
  • Tongs or oven mitts
  • A mold (use anything heatproof — jars, tins, shells!)

You don’t need a candle thermometer unless you’re getting serious. For scrappy projects, intuition and observation work just fine.

🔥 Melting It Down

Start by melting your wax scraps (and crayons if using) slowly over a double boiler. You’ll want to stir gently and watch for layering — sometimes waxes with different melting points separate in interesting ways.

Pro tip: Add a few drops of essential oil if your old wax has lost its scent. Or lean into the mystery scent — that’s part of the fun.

🪢 DIY Wick Hack

If you don’t have wicks on hand, make your own:

  • Soak cotton string in melted wax
  • Let it dry straight on a sheet of foil
  • Use a wick tab or a washer to hold it in place at the bottom of your mold

Secure it upright using a pencil or stick across the top of your container.

🌈 The Fun Part: Pour + Play

Here’s where you can get creative:

  • Layer different colors and textures
  • Add dried herbs or flower petals (optional, but aesthetic)
  • Repurpose surprising containers — seashells, vintage glass, even citrus peels

Let your creation cool for several hours (or overnight if you’re patient).

🧠 Lessons from the Flame

Not every experiment will burn perfectly. Sometimes your wick is off-center, or the wax tunnels weirdly, or the crayon color melts into sludge. That’s okay. This isn’t perfection — it’s resourceful creation.

What matters is that you took something headed for the trash and turned it into warmth, light, and maybe even a new hobby.

♻️ Why Scrappy Candles Matter

Candle-making with scraps isn’t just fun — it’s a small act of sustainability. You’re saving materials from landfills, reducing plastic-packaged candle purchases, and learning to work with what you have.

It’s eco-friendly. It’s budget-friendly. It’s flame-friendly. Win-win-win.

Eco-friendly fire starters made from reused coffee grounds, dried lavender, and cloves for natural home fragrance and sustainable fire lighting
